Something about fall makes us want to hit the road in search of bright foliage, apple trees, and corn mazes. And if you're on the American East Coast (or headed that way), you're probably not too far from family-friendly fall activities that are perfect for filling an October weekend away. Here are three of our favorites. What are yours?
1. Blue Ridge Parkway — Extending from the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in North Carolina all the way up through Shenandoah National Park in Virginia, this meandering 469-mile road is one of the best places to leaf-peep in the country. Besides stunning scenery and plentiful hiking trails for all skill levels, there are plenty of detours where you can find orchards, restaurants, and breweries along the way.
2. Boston, Massachusetts — We love Boston all throughout the year (even during its notorious winters!), but it really shines in the fall. The days get chilly, the trees get colorful, and the shops and restaurants get extra cozy. Take a stroll through the Public Gardens, go shopping on Newbury Street, and walk around the charming and historic North End, being sure to wander through Copp's Hill Burying Ground. If your kids are older, check out a ghost tour for an extra thrill.
3. Helen, Georgia — This quaint little village tucked away in Georgia's Blue Ridge Mountains offers a taste of Bavaria, complete with cobblestone streets, Alpine inns, and German cuisine. Running through October 28, Oktoberfest is a family-friendly affair in Helen, with dancing and activities for little ones, and beer and brats for parents.
